July 5th Beach Cleanup Party
We'll all probably do our share of beach partying on July 4th, right? Oh yeah. So, on Sunday, July 5th, its time to return the favor and help clean Twin Lakes Beach of the crazy amounts of trash, fireworks and empties that were left there on the 4th!
Please join Santa Cruz NEXT and Save Our Shores for the annual July 5th Beach Clean Up Day!!
That's right. For the second year, Santa Cruz NEXTers will be joining forces with other beach-loving Santa Cruzians to clean Twin Lakes Beach of the remnants from the prior night's crazy festivities. This beach is heavily impacted on the 4th, and it is crucial to remove all those spent fireworks, beer cans and other trash before it all ends up in the ocean. If you are only going to do beach clean up once a year, this is the day your help is most crucial!
WHERE: Come to the sun deck adjacent to the restroom building on Twin Lakes at the end of 7th Ave (MAP). There we'll provide you with supplies and directions on what sections of the beach need to be covered.
WHEN: Sunday, July 5th. NEXT will be there handing out clean up supplies and organizing from 7 AM to 10:30 AM. We'll gladly take any time you can give, but the earlier you arrive, the more impact you will have on this heavily trashed beach!
POST CLEAN UP PARTY!
We'll thank the first 40 volunteers that show up by 9:30 AM with a free drink ticket for the post-cleanup party at the Crow's Nest! Join your fellow NEXTers on the upstairs deck of the Crow's Nest from 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM!
Thanks, NEXTers. This is honestly a couple of the most important hours you can volunteer each year in Santa Cruz. "Pack Your Trash" is not just a bumper sticker—it's a commitment that Santa Cruz has to keeping its beaches beautiful, and our ocean free of trash!
If you have any questions please email info@santacruznext.org. Thanks, and see you Sunday morning!!
NEXT MOVIE NIGHT PREMIER OF FOOD, INC
Thanks to the two hundred of you who came out for the premier of FOOD, Inc at the Del Mar Theatre! The movie was a sell out, and we were very bummed to have to turn some people away at the door after the theatre filled up. Its a heck of a film, and those who have seen it take away a lot of surprising knowledge about the food industry in this country. Here's some photos of the evening.
A huge THANK YOU to those who volunteered, to Del Mar Theatre, & our sponsors:
We sure hope you do! Between great eating and drinking establishments, shopping, galleries, music venues, arts, movies, farmer's markets, special events and more, there is always a ton of stuff going on, day and night, in downtown Santa Cruz. But how to keep track of all the goings on? Well, the Downtown Association has taken care of that for you:
Check out their Downtown Calendar of Events.
Add it to your Favorites list and never miss another downtown event that you'd wish you had known about! Supporting our local businesses is where its at. Think Local First!
THE SANTA CRUZ DERBY GIRLS
Have you checked out a roller derby bout yet? If not, you are seriously blowing it. This is hardcore fun and as SC as it gets. Check out their new video below - it pretty much says it all.
Did you know that the SC Derby Girls donate a portion of each bout's proceeds to a local non-profit? The team has also helped the community by other means such as collecting school supplies, cleaning beaches, and sponsoring needy families during the holiday season. In fact, all Santa Cruz Derby Girls volunteer time to benefit our community. Go support them - you'll find a new passion if you attend a match - guaranteed!
